What is craniosacral therapy?

A person's hands

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that works with the deep rhythms of the body, helping to calm the nervous system and promote the body’s in-built capacity to heal itself.

Originally a branch of osteopathy developed by William Sutherland in the first part of the 20th Century, craniosacral therapy is suitable for all conditions, and for people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly.

Treatment takes place fully clothed, usually on a treatment couch. Most people report the experience as very peaceful and relaxing.

How does it work?

A craniosacral practitioner tunes into the subtle motions of cerebrospinal fluid - the fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord - in a person’s system. Using particular techniques to engage with this system, they can facilitate the release of blockages, tensions and stuck patterns that have been held in the system, often for many years.

As craniosacral therapy works deeply with the nervous system, it can have a very calming effect, helping to release deeply held tension and stress and allow the body to heal. This can be deeply beneficial, including for people who suffer from chronic stress and anxiety, or who have conditions such as autism or ADHD.
